Team Interview: Matthew MacLeod

Matthew MacLeod, Software Architect at BotsAndUs

The team at BotsAndUs is fully-equipped with all the necessary skills to bring a full-stack solution to market; from making the hardware and developing the software to selling and providing maintenance and support.

We are extremely proud of the talent we attract so we are starting a new series of blog posts - team interviews. This is a chance for everyone to meet BotsAndUs through the lens of the people who make it all work.

We are beginning this series with Matthew MacLeod who has been with us for over 5 years.

What is your role at BotsAndUs and what key areas are you working on?

I’m the software architect at BotsAndUs, and I design software platforms to support deployments for our robots. This means figuring out how to communicate with robots safely and securely, building tools to control robots remotely, and integrating with our customers’ existing systems to support their operations.

Why did you choose robotics and what use cases are you most excited about?

Robotics is a challenging field that offers a great opportunity to simplify existing systems and workflows. I’m excited about the possibility of automating boring and repetitive tasks to let people get on with more interesting things!

What new technology or innovation has recently caught your attention?

Machine learning is really the thing that has been accelerating a lot of development in our field and others. With access to access to lots of data and fast computers, systems are starting to be able to take more complex decisions quickly to more effectively serve users.

What qualities are most important to perform well in your field?

Software development is as much about people and process as it is about writing code! At least half of my job is working with other stakeholders inside and outside the company to figure out exactly what it is we need to build, how much time it will take, and being sure we avoid any dead ends – and that’s all before we start coding anything.
