Many of us have seen articles titled “____ Hotel ‘Employs’ Robots” or YouTube videos talking about a “CRAZY Restaurant With ROBOT Waitresses”, but just how crazy is that concept?

Robots acting as service assistants are becoming more common and more talked about as a realistic alternative to performing smaller tasks that are either too repetitive, inconvenient, or stressful for humans. Restaurants and hotels are incorporating automated assistants to perform simple tasks that can be easily done, but tend to be tedious.

Several hotels, whether it be in California or Japan, are “hiring” robots to execute repetitive tasks such as: bring extra towels, give out refreshments, and even tell bus schedules. They are also very entertaining for children and can even be used for babysitting, allowing parents to go out and have some time to relax. By having the bots rather than employees to do these things, it saves workers time and energy so they can focus on other more important tasks, such as checking people in and out or addressing more complex customer requests.

Restaurants use them for slightly more specific tasks. Some automatons follow a magnetic path to serve food and drinks to customers, whilst some are in the kitchen preparing food alongside the chefs. Having robots in restaurants can prove to be very useful- not only in the sense that they reduce the amount of labor costs, but also act as a sort of entertainment or distraction for guests. This might be beneficial to an establishment that has longer waiting periods for customers, whether it be due to cooking time or low number of staff.

Robotic assistants are a great thing to have in hospitality and service establishments, not only because they are efficient in uninteresting and repetitive, yet important tasks, but also because customers truly enjoy seeing something so unique from what they’re used to. Because these bots are so new and unique, customer experiences are very memorable, and when many customers enjoy a brand’s services, they become more loyal and are more likely to recommend that brand to others. When more customers are interested, the more likely a brand will succeed against its competitors.
